The Hidden Cost of Cheap Polishing Pads: What Your Supplier Is Not Telling You

Low-priced flexible polishing pads look like a great deal on the invoice. But the invoice does not tell the whole story. Here is what cheap pad suppliers do not want you to know.

Cheap pads use low-grade diamonds.

Not all diamonds are the same. Premium pads use MBD8 or higher grade diamonds with perfect crystal shapes. Cheap pads use recycled or low-grade diamonds with cracked crystals and irregular shapes. These broken diamonds create uneven scratches that require extra polishing steps to remove. Your cheap pad just forced you to buy more fine grit pads to fix its mess.

Cheap pads use fast-curing resin.

High-quality resin bonds need 48 to 72 hours of curing time at controlled temperatures. Cheap manufacturers use fast-curing additives that harden in six hours. These pads work acceptably for the first 60 minutes. Then the bond becomes brittle, cracks appear, and entire diamond sections fall off in chunks instead of grain by grain. Your pad is not worn out, it fell apart.

Cheap pads save on the elastic layer.

The foam or rubber layer between the diamond section and the Velcro backing is not decorative. It absorbs vibration and maintains even pressure. Cheap pads use thin, low-density foam that compresses permanently after 30 minutes of use. Once compressed, your pad becomes a rigid wheel that burns and chips your tiles. The savings on the pad cost you tiles.

The real math on cost per square meter.

A cheap pad at 5 dollars lasts two hours and polishes 200 square meters. That is 2.5 cents per square meter in pad cost plus rework cost for burns and uneven gloss. A premium pad at 12 dollars lasts eight hours and polishes 800 square meters. That is 1.5 cents per square meter with no rework. Cheap is not cheap. It is expensive in disguise.

Ask your supplier for their diamond grade and curing time.

If they cannot answer both questions clearly, find another supplier.
